Preparation
Ensure that surfaces to be varnished are clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, polish and any other surface contaminants.
Bare or New Wood
- Fill any gaps or minor imperfections in the wood using a suitable wood filler
- Lightly sand bare or new wood to provide a key
- Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
- Degrease wooden surfaces with Methylated Spirit and a lint-free cloth if required
Previously Painted Surfaces
- Sand newly painted wood first to provide a key
- Remove all traces of sanding dust prior to varnishing
- Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a suitable paint stripper, then sanded and cleaned prior to coating with varnish
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the container at all times.
Please note: Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil-based paint as this may cause discoloration.
- Ensure the product is well mixed. Do not shake
- Thinly apply 2 coats along the wood grain using a synthetic brush
- On porous surfaces dilute the first coat with 10% water
- If a higher level of durability and stain resistance is required, apply 2 coats of satin clear and a top coat of dead flat clear
- Lightly denib the surface between applications
- Remove all traces of de-nibbing / sanding dust with a vacuum cleaner
- Allow 2-4 hours between coats and 15-60 minutes after the final coat before use
Please note: Where a ‘dead flat’ finish with a high degree of protection is required, Polyvine recommend that surfaces are first treated with 2 coats of ‘Wax Finish Varnish’ and then finished with a thin coat of dead flat varnish. This will give a slightly brighter finish than using ‘dead flat’ on its own.
Cleaning EquipmentApplication equipment can be cleaned using soap and water. Once cleaned, allow to dry naturally.
Aftercare
Regular Cleaning
Surfaces coated with Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish can be wiped clean with a dampened lint-free cloth. Never soak wooden surfaces with water or use household detergents or cleaners as these can damage the finish over time.
